GPU ceased functioning abruptly and the BIOS displays PCIe slot as vacant?
Hi everyone, I'm facing some issues and don't have many solutions.
My setup is as follows:
Mobo : MSI H81M-P33
CPU : Core i5 4590
GPU : GTX 960
RAM : 8 GB
PSU : 500 watt
OS : Windows 11
For years I've used this configuration and it worked fine until recently. Sometimes the PC wouldn't start, the power light would flash on and off, and I'd switch to the built-in GPU, tweak the drivers, and it would function again. But eventually it stopped working altogether, showing nothing in Device Manager even when I tried to hide devices.
After reinstalling drivers, I uninstalled the GPU entirely, hoping it would be detected again. However, it still doesn't appear, even though I selected the option to show hidden devices.
Nvidia drivers aren't recognizing it. I checked the BIOS and noticed the graphics adapter was always set to PEG, the IGD multi-monitor setting was disabled, and the PCIe slot was empty. I tried removing it physically and reinserting it, but the GPU light still worked and the fans continued to spin normally.
It seems a failing PSU might not restart properly, causing it to shut down once more, which could indicate a problem and potentially lead to failure. Over time, the PSU's performance may decline.
I've been considering it might be my PSU because the PC LED is flickering and not turning on properly. It seems like the power supply could have lost a lot of capacity, which might have stopped the GPU from getting power.
It might be that the PSU 12v rail is not working if it's an older dual rail PSU, possibly because one of the rails is dead. What is the model of the PSU?
Antec VP500P has been in use since June 2015. The issue with the GPU is now occurring on the PC connected to it.
I believe the problem lies with the power supply now, since capacity tends to decrease over time. The PSU in question had just a two-year warranty, and its components were quite basic. Its longevity is truly remarkable.
the reason questions about the power supply have been asked is because it is the most common malfunction when a problem like this occurs.
the fact that yours is a
very
low quality unit is most likely the reason why your GPU isn't functioning as it should.
not the GPU itself.
it's always possible thought that this unit may have actually caused damage to your GPU, so keep that in mind also.
