You won't require them for a long time; we only recently reached the PCIe 3.0x16 boundary for GPUs with the 4090. Anything below that works fine on PCIe gen3, and the performance drop when using a 4090 on PCIe gen3 is roughly 2-3%. For SSDs, unless you're moving large amounts of data frequently, you don't need gen 5 NVMes, and even then top-tier gen 4 drives will handle it quickly.
It won't offer much value; you're probably better off swapping out the motherboards again before using them. I suggest opting for Gen 5 next time or even the one after that. Currently, they're mostly unnecessary since we haven't kept up with other important formats like GPUs.
No, there isn't any benefit (yet) for Gen 5. SSD's don't provide real world speed boosts, and there is not Gen 5 GPU, let alone one NEEDING Gen 5. It'll handle years worth of AM5 chips, like B350 does for AM4. It's a solid board, but there are others like the Lightning and a few others at the budget end that are good picks too. B650 is very strong for this generation.
This Gigabyte B650-Eagle-AX ATX motherboard is priced a bit higher but offers great value for its cost. It’s a solid choice, particularly given its affordability relative to similar models.
I’m unable to locate Eagle AX. Right now, you can opt for GA-B650M-AORUS ELITE AX or GA-B650M-GAMING X AX for roughly 30% more. Do these options justify the price increase? Are there alternatives offering superior sound compared to the Realtek ALC897 codec?
You might need to upgrade to the Pro AX if you want the Realtek 1220 setup. But honestly, it’s hard to tell the difference between them. The Elite AX has a 12+2 board, which could add about 30% more cost—go for it if that fits your budget. For me, I chose the Pro AX for reasons that made sense. It comes down to how much you’re willing to spend, and remember you always pay more than you receive. You’ll never get more value.
The B650 AORUS PRO AX isn’t in stock, but the B650 AERO G is on the market and appears to offer similar performance with a higher cost.
