I have a cheap Asus laptop running Windows 8.1. I want to dual boot Ubuntu, but I've never done it. Could someone help me figure the easiest but safest way to do it? Help greatly appreciated.

Enter the system partition and reduce the Windows space used (I’m not sure of the exact step). Make a bootable USB following their guidance. Start Ubuntu from the USB and pick the install icon on the desktop. Select to install alongside Windows if available; otherwise, you may need to set it up manually or give up.

I don’t feel confident enough to handle this by hand.

Hope Ubuntu can be installed together. My previous laptop didn't have that. I managed the manual partitioning and Ubuntu functioned properly. It seems I might not have allocated enough space in the root partition, which eventually prevented updates due to insufficient space in a specific area.

Manual partitioning might have deleted your files. The installation warning suggests no OS detected, so double-check your setup and consider backing up important data before proceeding.

Ensure your Windows partition is reduced first. @ UltimateHawkeye shared a helpful resource for that. The problem wasn't with the partition itself, but with losing update access over time.

Just set up a bootable USB using the provided link, then after starting it, click install and select "install alongside Windows." You'll be able to pick the Ubuntu size and complete the setup.

The choice wasn't available due to issues with Windows 8. I just reduced the Windows partition and divided the remaining space into three new partitions. Everything worked smoothly without needing boot repair.
