Game freezing after turning on EXPO is a new issue you're experiencing.
Hello. Recently I've faced a significant issue where my game freezes for a few seconds every few seconds. Occasionally it crashes completely, and I see an AMD warning about a driver timeout, telling me to restart the game temporarily. My system includes a 9800X3D GPU, ASROCK Taichi 7900XTX White, 32GB of 6000MHz CL28 RAM, and an MSI Project Zero motherboard. I've owned this machine since November/December 2024 and have kept it running at 6000MHz consistently. Initially, I didn't understand why it would freeze, so I replaced the GPU, RAM, and two M.2 SSDs—one of which was my boot drive. When I powered it back on, EXPO was turned off, causing it to default to 4800MHz. Playing Overwatch again resolved the problem, but freezing returned when I re-enabled EXPO. I attempted a 5800MHz setting, but it still freezes, not at 5600MHz. Should I consider reinstalling Windows? I recently did a fresh install on the boot drive and transferred files from an older M.2 drive, so I'm unsure what impact that would have. Thanks for any advice. Edit: Updated to the latest non-beta BIOS version in August last year, but freezing persists at 6000MHz. Edit 2: After a few hours of playing Deadlock without issues (another game prone to crashes before RAM changes), I launched Warframe and it crashed to desktop at 5600MHz. Perhaps the RAM speed isn't the main factor? Edit 3: Overwatch now freezes again at 4800MHz. Could the CPU be the culprit? Edit 4: MemTest86 passed four times, confirming all games crash at 4800MHz.
Update your BIOs. Test Overwatch at normal RAM speed, then check if turning on EXPO leads to problems. Disabling WLAN/LAN adapters may resolve the issues. Use the display driver uninstaller (DDU) if needed. Make sure to turn off your network adapters beforehand so drivers aren’t installed automatically. Good luck!
Previous update didn't resolve the freezing issue. Latest BIOS still doesn't fix it.
The difference in frames per second between 4800 and 6000 is 1200 fps. It's a noticeable gap that can affect smoothness and performance.
Approximately 15-20% or higher in deadlocks, based on my understanding.
