Hi, I tried boosting my GTX970 G1 Gaming to see if it would help with the performance. After reaching a core clock of 1580mhz at 71°C using 3Dmark and Heaven benchmarks, everything seemed stable. However, when launching GTA5, the game crashes immediately after entering story mode. This issue doesn’t occur in any other games I play. All drivers are current. Anyone know what might be causing these crashes or how to fix them? Thanks!

The issue stems from the excessive speed setting.

It happened with me also... the system would throw an error like "ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT" and say nothing about the GPU drivers failing. It wasn't because my graphics card was unstable or anything, but it really frustrated me since my card didn’t handle the game well. I needed extra frames per second. After flashing a custom BIOS, it worked—boosted to 1.212v (before hitting 1.187v) and I could run 1273 MHz without issues. Before that, it crashed at around 1100 MHz. Running any OS updates, especially those for MSI Afterburner or Shadow Play, would cause the game to freeze for about an hour.

Occasionally the GPU handles prolonged stress tests for 24 hours yet fails immediately when a game launches. Reduce the overclocking.

Overclock issues often appear only in specific titles. My custom build fails in WoW constantly, while everything else runs smoothly. It seems to be a consistent problem.

Every match processes overclocking in its own way. GTA V tends to resist it quite a bit.

GTA V appears to dislike overclocking. I achieved a +197 MHz boost on my 980, but most games work well except for GTA V. To play it smoothly I often use stock clock speeds; even a +50 MHz increase causes crashes. I own over 40 games and haven’t faced issues with my overclock. Evolve initially limited me to +197, but updates allowed me back to that setting. Edit: My 980 has been stable at +197 for six months, so it’s not a new issue. Edit 2: Are you seeing the ERR GFX D3D INT error when it crashes? That happens with enabled overclock and can reset my displayport signal, requiring a reboot. I’d also like to mention the frame rate barely changed after adjusting clocks—possibly only a few frames lost. My GPU still reaches 1300 MHz, and I’m managing CS GO 4K at 60 FPS with 4x MFAA and high settings.

I adjusted the clock speed to 1mhz and got a functional game, though it displayed strange red flashes during gameplay. Initially I assumed it was just police lights, but later realized it wasn't. The game ran smoothly at 10mhz as well, which is odd for a high-end GPU. In GTA, frame rates didn’t improve much, but each frame felt good since I was around 30 fps. It’s a bit frustrating.

Sure. My 290X and GTX 970 run smoothly in every game except Grand Theft Auto V.
