FX 8350 can't overclock AT ALL
my configuration uses the fx3850 and asus crosshair v formula amd 990fx, with 16 corsair dominator 1866 mhz and the corsair h80i water cooler. it reaches 5ghz at 1.440 v and has had bios flashing. my power supply is corsair 750 watts, and i'm on windows 8 pro 64bit. i believe i might be able to hit 5.2ghz. can you tell me if there have been any changes in the bios?
it's a shame I can't upload the photo from my PC for you, so i'll try this instead and hope it works for you.
The actual issue preventing you from reaching 4.2 GHz stems from insufficient voltage. This is the cause behind your lockups and BSODs.
Many FX CPUs require more than 1.4V to hit 4.6 GHz, and over 1.5V to reach 4.8 GHz. The CPUs you see achieving 5.0 GHz at 1.5V or lower are either premium chips or from the FX 9 series. Some models simply can't even reach 5.0 GHz, like my own.
I'm running my 4.9 GHz FX 4350 at 1.60625V LLC Medium. IBT AVX 10 trials stable with a 2-hour P95 run.
At 1.5V and 4.5 GHz, it's fine on a board with significant VDroop. Today's expectations are that a chip can overclock extensively without needing excessive voltage or powerful cooling.
I wasn't sure how you discovered this until you explained it.
