FPS using SEUS Minecraft shaders version 1.7.2
I set up some shaders for Minecraft using my R9 290, thinking it could manage the load. However, my local game runs around 40 FPS, which is below what I hoped for, especially compared to my friend's 90 FPS on a GTX 760 with shaders. After installing OptiFine at full settings and adjusting the view distance, the texture pack still helped but didn't fully resolve the issue. I'm playing with a 64x MC-enhanced pack and have pictures of my configuration and frame rates. Am I getting the performance I expected from MC shaders? It's unclear since I haven't used them before.
The developers mentioned issues with AMD cards since they can't properly test them. I attempted to install them on my GTX 645 and reached maximum performance at 30, which suggests the R9 290 should handle more than that.
I’ll experiment with adjusting certain parameters and then share the results. Lowering some options increased FPS by roughly 25%, and switching to a vanilla texture pack also helped. Here are a few examples: Maximum settings, MC enhanced (no AA), Minimum settings, Maximum settings (no AA), Vanilla texture pack, tiny render distance. Also tried Max settings with OpenGL off, MC enhanced. The recurring theme appears to be the texture pack.
The issue stems from Minecraft being built on Java, which is inefficient for gaming and limits optimization. Running similar tasks in engines like CryEngine using C++ would yield significantly higher frame rates while maintaining visual quality. You can't change that—it just reflects how Minecraft was developed with real-time destruction in mind.
