I received Flight Simulator 2020 today. When I began the tutorial mode, it became very choppy with frequent frame drops to just one and GPU usage plummeting to zero, making it completely unplayable. I had to wait a few seconds in the menu, close it, and after a minute or two the stuttering resumed. It was running on an i5 7400 and a GTX 980 with 16GB RAM.

MS fltSim2020 is known for its unusual nature. Achieving functionality demands significant hardware that doesn’t align closely with the game’s core requirements. Its design appears highly unconventional, making it a subject of extensive analysis as the first console-optimized title. It consumes a large memory footprint and is quite tangled in its structure.

I've noticed someone playing an RTX 2060 with medium configurations, as they mentioned that's the most stable option, while I'm using it at the lowest settings.

It appears the system is mostly single-threaded, yet it relies heavily on swap across most platforms. This seems confusing—like a riddle or a trick question. It doesn’t demand intense hardware performance, but with enough force it can function. It looks as though it’s intentionally weakened, possibly for desktop use. I think it will perform much better on an Xbox than on a regular PC.

There’s a bug right now with 4-core CPUs. A lot of quad core users have been having issues lately.

It's not intentionally limited in any way. My 3700X with RX580 can manage a blend of high and ultra settings at 22-30fps. Sure, it’s not ideal, but for an RX580 it performs reasonably well. The Xbox edition will likely have some code adjustments, but the main engine remains consistent for official add-ons to function properly.

My view differs from yours by highlighting aspects I find more significant. While you mention the CPU end being lightly threaded, I see it as a minor detail compared to the overall design flaws. I believe the card’s inefficiency stems from its outdated architecture and the mismatch between its capabilities and the market value of similar models. The fact that it performs comparably on a 580 suggests deeper issues than just thread count.

Yes, you are right that it only uses 4 of my cores most of the time. And yes, it is weird that an old RX 580 which is definitely not fast beats a 980. As I said though, there is a bug affecting 4-core CPUs so that is likely the issue This I very much disagree with. I doubt you've ever played flight sim, cuz the venerable FSX was the same. It barely ran on any hardware available. X-Plane 11 also doesn't run particularly well on any of the hardware I've ever used it on.

Refers to the meaning of “well.” I once owned a copy of xplane that worked adequately for me, but it might not suit you well. There are strange and confusing problems. These issues could just be random luck. It’s quite old software that was rebuilt, so any remaining problems should have been addressed.
