Connect your Microsoft account to your Windows system. This process verifies and approves or rejects transfers between devices. You can manage it via the activation settings in Windows, which you can find in the Start menu.

Are you sure? I've put Win 10 back on someone else's machine, and it worked right away without them even logging in.

He likely didn’t perform a full reset; instead, he simply transferred the drive, which may not have completed verification for activation. Over time, it could automatically turn off.

Ah, I missed that part. Ah, makes sense. I hate it, but it makes sense.

They consist of two systems. Using a Microsoft linked account keeps your product key tied to your account. After first setting up Windows 10, the key moves to you and activation proceeds. If you only have a local account, the key is saved with a unique code based on your hardware. Try to avoid changing your hardware between reinstalls of Windows 10, or you may need to enter your Windows 7/8 key again. When choosing how to reinstall, if a screen prompts for the product key and you don’t have one, select "I don't have one" to let the setup continue in trial mode until you’re online, at which point one of the two methods above applies.

You now have a fresh drive and prefer not to duplicate your existing setup, so you can install Windows safely without any risk—your current installation remains available as a backup. Avoid wiping the HDD until you confirm everything functions properly. Even then, keeping a second Windows version is wise. Also, disconnect the HDD during the installation process on an SSD.
