I observed unexpectedly lost 100gb of storage on my laptop. Using WinDirStat revealed an unknown file that cannot be deleted. Checking restore points didn’t help. No backup exists. I’m unsure what caused this or how to recover it. I’ve attached a screenshot of the scan for reference.

It might refer to various possibilities, some valid and others questionable. Check the link for more details.

Received only 5GB of storage, the main issue was the recycle bin.

It might be useful to try CCleaner, but be cautious with certain settings.

Show hidden files, navigate to the folder, then remove it manually.

Confirmed the change—system files are now displayed. Removed the 3GB hiberfil.sys file.

You choose every folder and go to properties, and the total size includes the drive space. This calculation might take a minute or two.

The file is now accessible through the file system. You can locate it manually and remove it. Watch for unusually large folders using the top-down approach. I previously faced this issue while running a VM, and during file transfers in or out of the VM, it would copy files to a temporary folder without deleting them.

The scan indicates it should be at the root of your C, so it shouldn't take much time if it's actually present.
