I recently purchased a G1 Gaming R9 390 thinking it would handle AAA games smoothly at 1080p with solid frame rates. Instead, my top choice, Fallout 4, dropped to just 20 fps even with medium settings. It seems to work okay with the rest of my games. Could this be a compatibility problem? Might it be due to my i5-4690k running at an unusually high 4.7 GHz? I’m really confused and would appreciate any advice. Thanks ahead!

The R9 390 should handle the game without issues, and the i5 won’t cause any bottlenecks. On the 390x model, temperatures rise significantly during gameplay. AMD graphics cards also tend to get hot. What are your current temperatures?

Start by verifying the Shadow Draw Distance isn<|pad|>. This value greatly affects draw calls; lowering it to Medium will likely improve performance. I’m using two R9 280s and maintain around 60 FPS without changing Shadow Distance to Ultra. You might also want to tweak the GodRay settings—some users say reducing them helps, though it doesn’t seem to make a difference for me. Check if the Beta version is installed as well. Also, confirm whether you’re still using CCC or have Crimson enabled. If you have Crimson, did you install the recent update from last week?

Absolutely, drivers are current. The shadow distance was really useful. Appreciate it!

Because you're using an AMD card, AMD continues to face problems with Fallout 4.

I don’t have a lot of experience with this setup. I own an 8350 with dual R9 280 graphics in XFire, and I’ve configured everything to Ultra mode except for Shadow Distance.

Additionally, some sections of the game run poorly. I often maintain around 60 frames per second in Boston, but performance drops significantly when entering buildings or traveling to suburban or rural areas, resulting in steady slowdowns and stuttering. This isn't a hardware problem—it's just the game's behavior in those zones.
