Experiencing issues with my eGPU.
Minecraft demands significant CPU power, especially on devices like the Steam Deck where the GPU stays under 1W while the CPU runs over 10W. Other titles tend to rely more on the graphics card. With a Thunderbolt eGPU delivering less than 99% usage, performance drops noticeably compared to higher speeds. In the past, choosing a TB3 eGPU was about ensuring enough bandwidth; whether it had a 20Gb/s or 40Gb/s port made no big difference—it just limited the data flow even more. A 40Gb/s connection won’t suffice for a strong GPU, and adding Thunderbolt overhead means you’ll likely get around 80% of what you expect. Still, I’m willing to test it on USB4, hoping drivers or UEFI settings fix the issue. Figuring out why it fails requires testing many factors like firmware and software.
