Experiencing issues with my eGPU.
I've observed something interesting. When I look away from the bots in Apex Legends, the usage skyrockets to 90%. Also, when I connect the EGPU via USB 4.0, it doesn't appear in the device manager under display devices. It's unclear if this matters, but Event Viewer shows a lot of meta data with failed staging.
It’s identified through the USB 3.2 connection. It appears as a Thunderbolt device rather than just a standard USB port. A Thunderbolt driver is likely required.
eGPUs depend on the Thunderbolt PCIe connection they offer, so they won’t function on ports without it. The 40Gbps speed in Thunderbolt restricts GPU performance, which is one reason eGPUs haven’t gained much traction. Their value for money is quite low.
My connection uses Thunderbolt, but UserBenchmark seems unreliable—it actually showed strong results for an EGPU.
Make sure you're reserving that dock solely for the eGPU and its monitor. Don't even connect a keyboard and mouse to it. Otherwise, thunderbolt eGPUs aren't ideal. Based on my experience using a Razer Blade and Core from 2016-2017, then a Yoga i7 in 2020, performance issues like input lag were noticeable. Switching back to a 4790k setup in 2017 helped fix problems such as missing spell interrupts in games like WoW. I observed a 50ms rise in input latency when comparing the GTX 1080 eGPU with the onboard GTX 1060 during Overwatch tests.
My RX 6700 XT seems to perform better than my 780M in certain games. The main issue is that my performance drops in some titles, especially during intense moments in Assassin's Creed Origins and Apex Legends, where usage fluctuates with the gameplay. In contrast, Minecraft runs smoothly without any issues.
