Experiencing extremely low latency even with a 100mbps link
Recently over the past few days my ping has been extremely high, often between 150-300ms in most games, whereas earlier it was around 10-60ms depending on the time. My neighbor has the same ISP and plan but has no problems and performs well. I have a 100 Mbps connection via Ethernet and am not downloading anything. I have limited networking experience, did some research, and tried using the tracert 8.8.8.8 command. The results show poor connectivity. What should I do? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
PING relies on how far you are from the server... possibly the game you use has several servers, so connect to the nearest one... Set up your own server for optimal performance. You might consider switching DNS servers to 1.1.1.1, though this mainly affects webpage speeds.
Check if your area has similar issues with ISP bills coming due. In many places, a bill due within a month causes slow, unreliable connections—especially noticeable during online activities like browsing, downloading, or gaming.
I’m linked to my nearest server. I mainly enjoy playing CSGO, and I and my friend from the same ISP are in the same server. I usually get 10 times his ping. It’s not a game or PC issue because I’ve tried many fixes and commands in-game and during startup, but the problem persists across all games.
These are all personal IPs before the ICMP filter parts, clearly indicating an issue related to your ISP.
I'm having trouble with this too. The ISP is not reporting any issues because of COVID-related server problems, but other users on the same ISP seem to have good performance. It's just my connection that's struggling. Can I try doing something to fix it?
I understand: the high ping appears to come from outside your local network. Because you and your friend share the same ISP and plan, check what DNS server your friend is using. If it differs, switch to his settings. If the problem stems from the ISP side, there’s limited control. You might try restarting your modem by turning it off for about five minutes and then back on. Wait until it fully powers up before testing again. I’ve noticed similar cases where ISP adjustments led to delays until the device restarted. Give it a while. Also, your home network could be fine, but the connection path—street level, ISP, or other internet nodes—might be overloaded causing the slowdown.
