No CPU overclocking. It failed already, whether XMP was used or not. After ten years of assembling PCs, I've never noticed MemTest86 doing much more than wasting time. I'll let it run its course later today while I focus on other tasks.
Memtest86 came up clean. One weird thing I've noticed that I can't see how it could be related, but noting it just in case: Ordinarily I have RivaTuner Statistics Server set to run on Windows startup. Lately when booting I get a message from RTSS saying "some system components could not be hooked right now." If I close RTSS, I have not seen a crash. All of the crashes so far were (I am 90% sure) with RTSS running in the background.
Alright, I think you're suggesting to remove it and check the results.
I plan to test it a bit more to identify the cause. I want it to be something almost harmless, like skipping RTSS entirely, since fixing hardware is much simpler. I’m puzzled as to why it began causing issues after a month—or even longer—despite having used the system without any updates to RTSS.
Recently, I've encountered multiple discussions about software failures, where poorly written code leads to severe issues like hard locks. It seems software developers are sometimes not meeting expectations. (It's worth noting that this might be related to Windows 10's QA problems during updates, which could definitely play a role. I'm firmly against using Windows 10.)
It's feasible. Have you checked DDU, the chipset drivers, and the Windows power plan?
Not yet. I'm actually chatting with someone on a local Discord who's experiencing a very similar issue on his system. He has an ASRock X570 Taichi, has tested the 5800X and 5900X, and both a 6900 XT and an RTX 3070. I just upgraded my motherboard's BIOS to the latest version, but now I can't control the RGB lighting on my RAM, which is a bit frustrating but not the main priority right now. DDU and updating the latest AMD graphics drivers should be the next steps.
I see... oof. yeah maybe a driver reinstall fixes it though... I've noticed these things are often interconnected and also get randomly messed up by windows updates and such (I mean otherwise you'd never need to update a bios or drivers on a working system) Also why I asked about power plans... for example when I run newest windows version and set my processor power states to *default* I'll get tons of random restarts / BSODs... But on 1809 if I do that, I will not get any BSODs etc, *but* my cpu will be constantly at 1.5v lol... which is why I set it to min 85% max 100% it down clocks properly this way and also isn't at 1.5v constantly, but this only works with 'windows balanced' power plan, any ryzen power plans will have issues, mostly performance related... oh and btw I get like thousands of WHEA 18 errors on boot, for about 3 minutes, but no crashes! and it also stops then and doesn't occur again until next reboot. (no idea I never found the cause) Just saying this stuff is buggy as hell in windows 10 and I very much believe your issue is similar and most likely driver / power plan related. But hopefully DDU fixes it! (I've seen it with new gen gpus, green or red)
