I share the same post on Reddit, but I'm uncertain why it doesn't appear in the sub. Probably not enough karma. To begin, I'm relatively new to overclocking. It's possible I'm missing a simple step. Anyway, my machine is an MSI GT73VR 6RF with a Intel 6820HK processor. The BIOS is current, and I confirmed with an MSI representative that they don't offer a newer version. The problem: My CPU ratio setting in the BIOS won't retain its value after each reboot when it's set above the standard 36. It retains if underclocked. Even more unusual, last night it only saved even numbers when the setting was above 36 (yes, that sounds odd, but I managed stable clocks at 38 and 40 with temperatures under 80°C). However, 37 and 39 never saved. When I restarted this morning, it didn't save the 40 value (~4.0 GHz) and now it refuses to save that setting when changed in BIOS and rebooted. It still records CPU core voltage even though the ratio isn't saved, although that detail isn't visible in the screenshot. My PC powers on twice—seeing the power button switch on, off, then back on when I tweak clock speeds—but this doesn't seem linked to whether it saves or not. At least, if it does save, it doesn't appear to be connected to the changes I make because it has rebooted twice and saved the ratio at least once. I've tried disabling turbo mode and speed stepping, but it still caps the CPU at its base clock of 2.7 and doesn't save the ratio. Maybe I'm overlooking something, but I don't know. I've looked up a bit and couldn't find a solution that worked for this issue.
When the BIOS behaves oddly I often reset the CMOS and restart, as removing the battery usually fixes it. On prebuilt systems this often means disconnecting the CMOS cell. A failing battery can also lead to problems, though it usually prevents full saves rather than just partial ones.
Intel processors boost performance via turbo boost, which must be activated in the BIOS. Which operating system are you running? Does your BIOS provide distinct settings for turbo ratio thresholds? These determine the CPU's speed. The BIOS may not configure them accurately. For an unlocked Intel 6th Gen mobile CPU, ThrottleStop is suggested to manage speed. Share some screenshots after startup to verify the BIOS settings. Many makers omitted this feature initially when Speed Shift was first released. Also verify the MMIO Lock box to unlock the maximum multiplier. Several screenshots can clarify many doubts.
I'm working on Windows 10 Home Version 22H2. I didn't modify any settings in the program for these screenshots. The multiplier was adjusted to 38 in the BIOS before this, and it reset to around 36 when the system started. I’m puzzled by how the BIOS keeps the processor at 3.6 GHz across all cores instead of lowering it to its base speed of 2.7 GHz when I set it to 36. Stock only allows a maximum of 3.2 GHz per core, but I’m not sure what the exact behavior is. Regarding separate turbo limits, there’s an option in the advanced BIOS to manage each core’s clock if that’s what you meant. Otherwise, I haven’t found a direct way to adjust turbo speed through the BIOS settings.
Inspect the Speed Shift option in the TPL window. Also examine the MMIO Lock box located at the top right of this window. Execute a basic test such as a TS Bench - 1 Thread to apply stress on the CPU. Display a screenshot of ThrottleStop during the test. Mobile CPUs employ different power-saving states, which is why it's crucial to verify CPU performance under consistent workload. Once Speed Shift is activated, you should notice SST in green on the main display. On the main screen, you can adjust the Speed Shift EPP settings to manage CPU speed. Choose EPP 0 for peak performance even with light load, or EPP 84 if you prefer your CPU to slow down under light stress. You can modify the EPP value in ThrottleStop as needed. I believe implementing Speed Shift Technology will resolve your issue. The default IccMax seems too low. In the FIVR window, review the Unlock Adjustable Voltage box and set IccMax to the highest value, 255.75, for both the CPU core and cache. This helps avoid EDP throttling.
