In short, I attempted to turn off unnecessary services on my PC but ended up disabling something crucial. Every time I power on the system, I see a BSOD with the error "BAD SYSTEM CONFIG INFO." I've tried most Windows recovery tools, but nothing works. Safe mode also won't boot. I'm running out of options. Can someone help me run msconfig from the command prompt? I tried, but it reports I don’t have permission. I’m using Windows 8.1. Thanks for any advice or suggestions!

Try using the Windows 8.1 disk to attempt a recovery, but if it doesn’t work, your OS is damaged—you’ll need to reinstall it.

Avoid changing the Registry unless you're certain. The best guidance comes from @dragoon20005. If it fails, perform a full reinstall.

MSCONFIG isn't in the registry. MSCONFIG actually shows what's running. The issue might be disabling certain services, so a fresh installation of Windows would fix it.

MSConfig remains crucial even when disabling core services; it achieves the same outcome as modifying the registry. He should have checked what each service does first. I did the same and Windows booted up a bit faster, everything working properly.

I saw MSConfig but thought about REGEDIT... Confusedelf_facepalm: *knowing it just so happens* wow, that was a big brain moment. Edited on Nov 29, 2017 by SansVarnic

There’s no way to launch msconfig directly from the recovery screen. You can access a Windows 8 copy on a USB drive, but using it won’t be straightforward. Someone might know what the recovery image is called or how to proceed. Thanks!
