It seems putting that on the laptop could be a good move. My previous netbook ran Ubuntu smoothly, and checking its resource usage showed Pop OS would be suitable for your device. I’d recommend giving it a try.

Using the MacBook in recovery mode and installing the OS will retrieve the most recent version it can handle. It must remain powered on to ensure a successful update.
