Elex
Elex
They previously had some popularity, and it appears they welcome mods such as those from Bethesda.
I find the game really impressive, especially the combat, and player feedback on the platform is mostly encouraging. I’ll hold off on purchasing for a while but keep learning more about it. The beginning of the game can be tough, so it’s wise to skip many battles until you reach around level 10. Here’s a video with advice on surviving in the game’s environment. Some reviews for ELEX have been quite harsh, especially the IGN piece, which seems to misunderstand the mechanics. The reviewer noted that opponents’ levels rise too fast compared to the player, but since there’s no actual scaling, it suggests the issue lies elsewhere. They also mentioned spending over two hours on a boss fight, yet the footage showed the boss had a skull symbol next to its health bar—indicating it was well beyond their level. This feels like a design oversight. The Witcher 3 behaves similarly. The IGN review here is also among the lowest scores for the game. It appears Piranha Bytes is already developing ELEX 2 and has secured €150,000 in EU funding: https://www.worldofelex.de/en/site/news-...-confirmed
I’m really drawn to this idea, might decide to purchase it now, or perhaps hold off until the Halloween sale for a better deal.
I tend to agree, devs who put their pure rpg nerd mana into making these deserve the monies. I'll probably buckle tomorrow, been looking for a game to put some srs hours into and this seems right up my alley. How is the RPG experience though, for eg with Bethesda and the Elder Scrolls and Fallout stuff there is too great an emphasis on just doing what you want in the open world but imo they compromise a bit too much with the immersion aspect wrt to the game universe and npcs/voice acting/cutscenes etc. The Witcher 3 really nailed it with the 'meaningful' side quests with the voice and cutscenes but that was a big league AAA game.
Anticipate Gothic in a transformed world. It carries both power and vulnerability.
It's a good investment if you enjoy RPGs, as you can spend a lot of time playing. As @Praesi mentioned, there are no microtransactions or day-one DLC. They have a solid audience, particularly in Germany and Eastern Europe. I’m unsure if PB ever provided modding tools, though there are some available—like this Gothic 2 mod that’s currently being developed. IGN seems confused about the discussion. Of course, the game isn’t flawless, but they’re mainly criticizing it because they don’t understand how to play it.
This experience builds on what you've seen in Gothic or Risen, though it differs from titles like TES or Fallout since you don't craft your own character. You still face significant decisions, such as which faction to align with. Many missions offer several solutions and different endings depending on your choices. If I had to liken it to another game from a different developer, it would feel like Witcher 3 developed with a much tighter budget.
The IGN Review came across as a joke. Even more disheartening than before.
