The simplest choice is often doing nothing, which allowed cross vendor multi GPU to function properly. They’d need to push hard to prevent it from being useful, but the only realistic path would be forcing their hardware to perform poorly together—something that isn’t ideal for public relations.

It's okay to appreciate SLI/Crossfire, but it doesn't surpass those options. The benefit lies in your existing graphics card providing a slight performance lift, rather than sitting idle. For mobile setups with a dedicated GPU and Intel integrated graphics, they can collaborate to offer a minor improvement.

I’d still like to explore how a midrange desktop with an Iris Pro graphics card could perform. If standard HD graphics from a 4770k can reach around 4 FPS on a Titan X, then you’d expect Iris Pro to boost at least 10 more, which is quite a big jump in value versus performance. We’ll find out if this holds true, and it seems likely that Intel will once again offer GT3e and GT4e graphics for desktops around 2016—possibly bringing back those options.
