Is there any benifit of going quad rank ddr3 or is it like ddr4 and quad rank is useless garbage? Mainly asking since in the future i may upgrade my moms old laptop from an abysmal 1x4 single channel to 4x2 dual channel (dual rank for extra performance, all laptop ram is bare pcb so just request the ones with 8 ics and not 4 ics, dont think dual sided 16 ic 2gb sticks are common)

I can provide the specifications, though performance gains from dual channel may vary between an i7 and a Pentium.

The system runs at a steady 2.3ghz despite issues, power settings stay fixed, and dual-channel doesn’t really matter much. When the CPU is fully loaded, higher ranks still perform better than lower ones, though the main concern is whether quad-rank benefits DDR3.

It's not necessary to overanalyze. As long as you have dual channel and dual rank, it should work. Getting four ranks per channel in a laptop is also possible.

It's possible to use four slot laptops with dual-sided RAM, even though this "i5" model has four slots—likely due to higher-end variants. Running quad rank might work, though it could be better than dual in some cases. I'm curious about whether it performs well on DDR3 instead of DDR4, and I have Fiverr control through throttlestop to adjust VCCSA if needed.

I've only heard of laptops with four ports before. I didn't really look into it closely, but I don't believe adding more than two channels would provide much extra benefit, since the biggest improvements might come from moving from one channel to two.

Which architecture offers advantages? DDR4 provides benefits over DDR3, especially for higher performance.

The DDR3 era feels like a distant memory now.

Welp if thats the case then ill just stick to dual rank, 2gb sticks are pretty cheap, added discount for being laptop ram and in low demand so just gotta find single sided 1rx8 (8 ics) 2gb sodimms and run 4x2, def gonna avoid 1rx16 garbage half rank with only 4 ics nuking bandwidth

Except for very high-capacity chips in densely packed modules, quad rank doesn't stand out when compared directly with dual rank.
