Over the past few months, my gigabit internet connection on my desktop has been slow, usually between 200 and 400 Mbps. Even after the internet technician inspected everything—cables, ports, settings—I still saw poor performance in speed tests. I’m unsure what’s causing it and don’t know if I should replace my network card or the modem. Any advice would be helpful.

I also pay for a gigabit connection (1Gbps Download, 20Mbps Upload), yet my speeds are only about 600MBps Download and 18MBps Upload. I don’t know the motherboard model, but swapping it or installing a new NIC probably won’t fix the issue. This video might offer helpful tips: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSJw_oQklz8

I received the test two days ago and was around 920, though occasionally I saw it average. Now it’s dropping to 300. The video still makes sense, but I’d prefer 600 more, yet I’m unsure how to reach that level.

Is there another connected high-speed device on your local network? You might test the connection speed by running iperf between the two devices to see if your router is limiting performance. If you're relying on the built-in gateway provided, that's expected.

I returned the modem-router combo they provided and purchased a standard cm1000 modem because it’s solely for my computer at this time. I intend to upgrade to a high-end router later, but it’s not essential right now. My desktop is the only device connected to the internet. There’s no switch; it goes straight from the modem to the PC.
