Yahoo, I woke up early today and my computer screen was glowing dimly. When I clicked to turn it off, it immediately went straight to the main menu instead of going to sleep. In the past, when I tried to go to sleep by choosing a "time," I accidentally left the setting for "Never." That one change fixed everything. Thanks so much for all your ideas and help! Colif, I do have the Lenovo Vantage app on my computer and I use it to check driver updates as part of my routine maintenance. But I can't figure out how to see a history report that tells me if any of my hard drives had errors. I think you might be able to find something similar because lately, my printer has been acting up. When I tried to install the software for my Brother MFC-J485DW printer, a tool called ControlCenter4 kept popping up an error saying it couldn't start. Once this error window closed, the rest of the software installed fine and everything worked except that specific scanning utility. Any thoughts?
I'm not sure if that link will fix it, but maybe the Brother app could open a blank or partial window.
My mom is turning 80 next year and I never thought she'd ask me questions like these here online... that would actually be my daily job.
Thanks for the link about Brother printers. I thought that might fix my printer issue, but nothing worked there. I think I'll just chill and use my wife's laptop if I need to scan something. I hardly ever need to do that anyway. As for the original post, the laptop now sleeps fine when it should, and the fix seemed to be choosing "Never" in Power Options. That was odd, but it worked. I'm a bit hesitant about setting a time to sleep again because everything is working well right now. Colif, also I don't want to mislead anyone. Even though I'll be 80 next year and haven't taken any computer classes, I've been playing around with them as a hobby for a long time. My first PC was a Gateway running at 433 MHz with 64 MB of RAM and 10 GB hard drive in Windows ME. That was tricky but fun back when dial-up existed, lol. I've also built several custom computers over the years. Anyway, I love to learn new things and keep up with technology. : )
It feels weird that turning sleep off makes the device go to sleep right away... unless doing so resets things and then you turn it back on later. Since it won't sleep if sleep is set to never, ME was just trying to tell you you survived. Don't think about dial up. 4 hour limits apply, so try downloading a 40mb file before the internet gets cut off.
Totally agree it was a waste of time. Yesterday I went ahead and reset all the power settings back to their default values, and this morning it was still sleeping just like it should have been. Everything is fine now. I've had some strange issues with Windows 11 that I didn't get with Windows 10. For example, my printer stopped working sometimes and there were problems with the power buttons too. I've run the system file checker a dozen times and it finds and fixes corrupted files or just says everything is okay. Anyway, my main problem right now is with Disk Cleanup. For some reason it won't clean up that 1.3 GB of temporary files. I'm going to look into cleaning them manually when I have time later on. Cheers
