Do I need to overclock my CPU?
It seems my CPU is restricting the GPU's capabilities. Here’s the earlier discussion, and here’s guidance on where to target overclocking for a Ryzen 5 3600 if needed.
It seems best not to create any delays; my specs are 3600 and 3070, and so far the main issue has been the GPU. Overclocking Ryzen is tough and the gains aren’t clear.
Overclocking isn't really beneficial from my perspective. Raising the clock speed by 300-400mhz usually goes unnoticed. Many purchase these for show-offs, boasting about powerful components like K processors, high-end Z boards, and advanced liquid cooling. GPUs also come with built-in boosting capabilities that perform well. I own an older 1070 which auto-boosts to around 1,750mhz. I’ve managed a stable 2050mhz and noticed minimal performance changes. What stands out are the temperatures: 83°C at 2050mhz and 68°C at 1750mhz.
Efficiency comes from balancing performance and power use. An overclocked setup can operate faster while using lower voltage and generating less heat compared to the standard configuration. You don’t have to limit everything—undervolting is another option if needed.
The overclocking process can become quite unusual sometimes. *I bought a 3090 and 'overclocked it a lot'* "like it's working perfectly"* — honestly, I accidentally increased the frequency a bit too much. Now it runs faster, runs cooler, and uses less power (though I’m not sure why). The power consumption is around 270 watts whether or not I undervolted it. I think that’s just the system hitting its maximum limits, but GPU docs don’t mention power caps when you undervolt. If this helps, let me know!*
Getting higher signal strength over time at the same output requires lowering the voltage. To cut total energy consumption, lower the power cap or slow down the clock speed. Doing both can help.
I understand, right? But I wasn't sure since my low voltage setting doesn't restrict perf limits in gpuz at all—only idle is affected. At stock it works perfectly, handling everything smoothly. Still, it sometimes exceeds 270W, which is a bit concerning.
it will increase its output as much as possible until reaching the power ceiling—adjusting for 0.9v instead of 1v to achieve 2000mhz will deplete your power budget faster, causing throttling. In either scenario, you'll hit the power limit before completion. To lower power consumption, either lower the power limit or decrease the frequency, which will inherently restrict the drawn power at that frequency.
You don’t have to push your system too hard. Modern equipment handles games quite well—especially when you’re purchasing at or near top-tier models. Even mid-range options perform adequately. Used to, people would opt for cheaper gear to reach or surpass flagship specs. Now it feels more like bragging, since many overclockers stick to forums instead of sharing publicly. Just a thought 
It's clearly a part of the setup. Generally safe, provided you're aiming to assist. It's similar to vehicles or firearms—just like with those. People who get excited tend to be in that mindset.
