It seems you're questioning why certain systems face such problems. Back in the late 2000s, Linux struggled with graphical performance compared to Windows XP, especially when using compositors. Even after upgrades like Vista and 7, Linux lagged behind, which is surprising given its progress. Why would these issues still exist?

KDE Plasma runs well on my laptop. Open source graphics drivers usually help reduce problems, but if you're working with 3D graphics and an Nvidia card, you might face limitations. Nvidia pushes developers to reverse engineer their drivers, which often leads to poor performance unless you use their proprietary version.

I own a graphics card from earlier that wasn't ideal for running Linux, but maybe things have improved recently

Traditionally Nvidia led in 3D graphics and remains strong with high-end cards, though AMD has made significant progress by joining open source driver efforts. For smooth performance, Intel usually offers better support due to more development resources, followed by AMD. AMD tends to perform well on rolling release distributions such as Arch or openSUSE Tumbleweed.
