I’m not experiencing any problems with Ubuntu. One concern I have is that the latest X server might struggle with proprietary graphics drivers. This issue appears on Fedora and Arch Linux, where these drivers are slower due to limited development and closed-source constraints.

I wasn't referring to performance. I'm discussing bugs and compatibility issues. On Arch Linux you can apply an update, but check if the server has one while Nvidia doesn't. Nividia's proprietary software might be better than open-source drivers, but it struggles with updates for Xserver. Since it's closed source, the developers don't collaborate.

I was considering KDE because it runs quite smoothly for me, but since it doesn't suit you... perhaps try Budgie? I believe Budgie is currently using Mutter, which GNOME 3 employs, so you might want to hold off until it updates to Qt. Also, don’t rush writing off Xfce too soon. GNOME 3 is one of the heavier desktop environments available right now, so a lighter DE could be better. You can even pair KWin with it to achieve the smooth animations KDE offers: http://www.thelinuxrain.com/articles/tut...-with-xfce

I don’t mind XFCE, actually I prefer it in many ways, but there are two problems: on X I encounter the issues you mentioned, and apparently it isn’t compatible with Wayland yet—it feels quite basic, unlike other desktops where media controls work globally through a shared system (sorry, I can’t explain it better). That’s just one case.

Wayland issues aren't always a big deal. GNOME can run smoothly, and KWin feels quite responsive. Xfce might seem simple, but it’s reliable and lightweight. You likely have few alternatives, so Xfce plus KWin could be a good choice. Why do you dislike KDE?

I've noticed some instability issues and a few odd behaviors. It doesn't seem to disable mouse acceleration properly, it doesn't recognize my UPS like other devices do, and the interface often gives me that unsettling feeling. I know it might sound strange, but that's how it feels.

If you want stability, KDE now has LTS versions of Plasma (currently 5.8 LTS). Unless I'm missing something, you just turn Pointer acceleration down to 1.0 x under System Settings->Input Devices->Mouse->Advanced. What is a UPS? I kind of do and don't know what you mean when you say the interface is unsettling. My first thought is it's because KDE Plasma is different, which is a valid reason not to like it. The titlebars are also a massive waste of space. GNOME is worse for applications with no client side decorations, but I'll admit that the GNOME apps that do have CSDs look pretty slick, if basic.

It never really felt correct, honestly—it kind of acts like a battery for a computer desk.

If you're looking for alternatives to KDE or Xfce, MATE is a good option. It supports KWin as well, though performance may vary depending on your window manager's smoothness. KWin could also run under GNOME, but I'm not sure about that. There seems to be some uncertainty about why it wouldn't work.
