Hey everyone. I just got my new Ryzen 7 3700X and wanted to try overclocking. I used Ryzen Master to get it stable at around 4.4GHz on 1.337v, which was enough for me. I took screenshots of the CPUID and Ryzen Master results, but it made me think about why the 5th gen had a higher TDP (95W) compared to the 7th gen (65W). If that’s why I could push it higher, I started wondering about the voltage settings. I checked AMD’s official notes on voltage reporting and found most tools give inaccurate readings, except for CPU-Z with default settings. It showed my chip was downclocking to 1v or less at idle, which was good. Still confused about whether running such high overclocks safely is okay or if it could damage the chip. Is there a reason to avoid overclocking these models unless you’re really careful? Thanks!
The issue isn't primarily about voltage but rather heat and current stress. High voltage paired with low current usage is generally fine. A single core running at 1.45V, with half the cores idle or gated, results in minimal power consumption—thus safe. For sustained performance, a 4.4GHz 70C model at around 1.325V would be acceptable. Operating the CPU near its maximum temperature (90-95°C) is tolerable but not ideal. Some applications may misreport data, including AMD tools. I don’t rely on Ryzen Master; instead, I use reliable software like Hwinfo64 for accurate metrics. CPU-Z remains a trusted reference with decades of data. Overclocking should aim for minimal temperatures, not just peak draw. Additional note: manuals warn that overclocking can void warranties and carries risks.

I plan to try it out today. I used to work on the 3Dmark spreadsheet in the GPU area but stopped a while back. Now I’m in a better place to revisit these tasks (having disposable income makes a difference).
