A new Windows 10 Mobile version for the Fast Ring was launched yesterday. This marks the debut of the Redstone build. It’s version 14267 and is currently available only on the Lumia 950, 950 XL, 550, 650, and Xiaomi Mi4. You can now share photos using the Messaging + Skype app. Cortana can now recognize music, similar to Shazam, and you can easily switch to private mode in Edge. WordFlow is now functioning within Edge. WInBeta has a helpful video demonstrating these updates. On the backend, the latest release finally addresses the issue of the page reloading when pressing Enter while typing a post. I didn’t see it mentioned, but there’s an improvement there. From my tests with the Lumia 950 XL, the forum doesn’t crash or reload the page when using the Enter key. Wow! I also noticed that you can no longer set a picture on the glass screen—this is likely due to limited color options and higher battery consumption. Battery performance remains uncertain at this stage.
On Saturday evening I decided to upgrade and bought a Lumia 950 XL. It looks like the timing was perfect... haha. After trying Windows Mobile 10 on my Nokia Lumia 925 for the past two months, I’ve seen some improvements. On the 925 the battery life actually got better—about 10-15% more efficient—and it didn’t overheat like the WP8.1 did. That was mostly due to age and heavy use rather than the operating system itself. I noticed the phone runs a bit slower on startup and login, but opens apps smoothly. Performance in general is stable, with no major crashes. Compared to the 925, it seems a tad more reliable so far. The 950 XL has been pretty solid too; I got through a full day of heavy use and still had about 12 hours left before needing a charge. After recharging for over an hour, a 40-minute video played on my TV with the battery at around 55%. I’m still waiting to see how the battery holds up over time. The device feels light, especially when the battery is removed—almost nothing weighs. If I had to guess, the battery is probably around 80-85% of the phone’s total weight. I’m still digging into the newer OS features, so I can’t comment much yet. There are some hiccups, like settings closing on their own when switching options or apps opening randomly during first use. The weekly updates are a good sign. Most core apps work well now, but it’ll be interesting to see how things evolve with more time. I’ll share more once I’ve had a chance with the new model. Maybe I’ll check back about the 925 if anyone wants to hear my thoughts.
Congrats on your new phone. I think you've just missed the free Display Dock offer through the Lumia offer app. But do check for the free 1 year Office 365 subscription if it's still there. Funny enough, I too upgraded from the 925 to 950XL. Just received the Display dock the other day and I wanted to test Continuum more with it but I'm kinda busy atm. But my first impression from a quick test wasn't that great tbh. I probably need to get a keyboard and mouse combo to test it properly. I really wish they would allow for a longer shutter speed in the stock camera app. The camera is amazing for night shots. The 10586.107 build is pretty damn stable for 925. But there is still no option for the glance screen so battery life will take a hit for a bit. I wonder if using larger display scale will use less system resource and possibly getting longer battery life. Downloading the Build 14267 as I'm writing this.
The $50 certificate remains, but I require a recommendation email to proceed with claiming it.
Windows 10 Mobile new version is available. Required multiple restarts to fix the WiFi connection, but now it functions properly. I'm using a Lumia 950 XL. Also observed freezing when switching to the glance screen, though that issue has resolved itself since the WiFi problem was fixed.
Still sees some pages reload when switching platforms. Loading feels much quicker now. The InPrivate icon/text shows errors, possibly due to unsupported characters. Edit: Please verify the issue when adding or placing live tiles into a folder—try moving them in and out to see if it resolves. I haven't tested many tiles since the phone was recently restored with few apps installed. Edited February 25, 2016 by atrash Added info
For a while, some gadgets bought without Windows 10 Mobile received no Fast ring release. See the article for details.
