GZ was a minimal level packed mainly with content from an upcoming game, serving as extra cash in between. It felt more like a precursor to the infamous Firewatch experience. The ending seemed a bit dull but matched the tone well. I liked it and would have enjoyed playing more, though its short runtime—just two people talking—might make it feel repetitive if played longer.
In my opinion, Firewatch falls short because its conclusion feels disappointing. There were many directions it could have taken and aspects that didn’t get enough attention. This made me question the effort put into it, especially given the limited resources of indie developers. They often rely on dialogue rather than visuals, which can leave certain elements unexplored. I think the lack of depth came from a belief that we’re only supposed to be told what we want to see, rather than experiencing it through gameplay. My perspective suggests that missing features should be seen as design decisions, not shortcomings.
Really, maybe it’s time to stop grumbling about the $14 ticket price for a regular showing.
