Dirt Rally models Q6600 and E8400 with HD5850 display
Hey everyone, I'm trying to improve my setup for Dirt Rally. My brother loves the game, but his current rig with an E8400 at 3.0GHz and a 5850 at 1440×900px is running slow, especially on low settings. I'm unsure if overclocking the E8400 will fix the issues or if we should upgrade to a Q6600 and do an overclock too. Could someone test Dirt Rally on a Q6600 and share their experience here? Thanks!
I tested it on a Dualcore+iGPU setup (APU powered GPU, not dedicated) and my i5+HD4600. The key was keeping shader settings minimal (higher values help). I used the highest texture quality possible, but it still performed well. 5850 managed to handle many shaders (over 1400) despite only 1GB of VRAM. /Catalyst Drivers? I updated them and checked for differences in performance.
You're noticing the performance details of the HD 5850. What video speed are you observing?
It performed well at medium graphics settings, around 30 to 45 frames per second initially, though performance improved with updates. Now it runs at the lowest settings—1440×900—and maintains 40 to 130 fps, though occasional stutters still occur. The CPU usage stays high at 90–100%, suggesting it’s a solid upgrade for newer titles that demand more processing power.
Despite being an older method (65nm over 45nm), you’ll get an extra 2 cores. However, before investing, test it in normal voltage and temperature ranges to check for any performance gains.
