Let me look into that and I'll come up with something. I used to have a proggy that would do it (once upon a time), I'll see if I can't figure out what I was using before and post about it. If there is only one account on the machine that should (Not guaranteed) function as the Admin account by default. Right clicking the .exe and selecting that option to execute with should be doable. EDIT: Read this, it may help. Description of the Windows Registry Checker Tool (Scanreg.exe) - Microsoft Support I believe I know where that proggy I was using is but need to find it and see if there isn't a good place to get it from. Cnet has some but most of the free ones I saw had noted viral flags, one of them didn't so that's a good thing at least in a last resort situation. EDIT 2: Found it. Be sure to stash this somewhere so you'll always have a copy. Download Microsoft RegClean - MajorGeeks
Thanks, I will try DXdiag first, then try this next, I won't be able to try for another several hours though. All of this really helps because I was getting incredibly annoyed by Windows XP, not the first time either. Although I will say it is positively snappy on an AMD Sempron 3200+, 512mb of RAM, an ATI FireGL V3600 and a 128GB SATA SSD. It boots up in roughly 7 seconds not including the "hit f1 to enter bios, or wait and the pc will continue to boot" thing, seems unfair to include an arbitrary restriction when there is a BIOS splash screen that does the same thing.
The Direct Draw test functioned perfectly. Direct3D stopped working right away on the Direct3D 7 component, displaying the error: The direct 3d 8 crashed with the error: The direct 3d 9 crashed with the error:
Possibly a driver problem since it's an ATI GPU driver, those can be a headache to get working right. If so that would account for the failed tests, it's also possible your failed DX9 installs could be at the root of it all messing with the drivers too. I suggest removing the GPU drivers, then run the registry cleaner and then reinstall your GPU drivers in that order.
