That's why Google picked 720p as the standard for videos everywhere. They want to keep internet traffic from getting too big and slow.

They had better keep up with what they started back then, even though YouTube started using 4K ten years ago. The standard has mostly moved to 1080p already. Just because people can still do fast processing at 1080p without waiting too long when this happens makes it a good sign for now.

I just got another email reply from YouTube support. They say they fixed something, hoping it's a permanent fix. Before this happened, all four of my videos uploaded over the last few days didn't offer 1440p or use the VP9 codec; now they are at 1440p and using VP9. Andrew, one of the support guys, didn't explain what was wrong or even admit it was YouTube's problem. He seemed to blame me instead, making it look like my system doesn't support VP9 or that I don't know how to encode properly. That didn't make sense to me at all. If my system could actually use VP9 when watching videos, why wouldn't it be showing up? It made no sense if I couldn't see those missing features on any of my clips. I just hope they really fixed the issue and that this is now fixed for you guys too.

Yeah, I think I get it now. It looks like they fixed this problem for me (and probably most people too). All my videos used to show up stuck at 1080p are now playing in full HD (4K). I agree with the idea that blaming users is annoying and not good, but unfortunately a lot of big tech companies do it. I doubt they are actually responsible for this though; he probably just had to say something even if they didn't mean to.

My YouTube videos show up at 1440p60, but they look like they are playing at 1080p60 because the quality isn't actually higher than that.

The fix is done almost three months ago. The wait you're probably feeling just seems longer than normal for 1440p videos, especially if they are long ones. Remember we're in a big holiday rush, so many more people are uploading video now, which might make the processing servers take a bit longer to finish high-res work. In any case, I've uploaded some short videos (6 or 7 minutes) recently, and all of them came out as 1440p without problems. The time seemed maybe slightly longer than usual, but it wasn't enough to worry about at all. Later today I'll be uploading a few longer ones that are almost double the length, so I'll let you know how long it takes to process them down to 1440p.

I've been struggling with this for a while now, about the last week or so. It's happened to me six times out of eight videos I uploaded recently. They just won't process up to 1440p after two days; usually, my videos finish normally in twelve to fourteen hours if luck is on my side. But lately, nothing ever completes properly. While 1080p videos usually get done within one or two hours, and I know that 2k and 4k take a long time, my 1440p uploads are taking twenty times longer than usual. Sometimes it's so slow I have to delete the video and re-upload them just to make sure they finish. This is really annoying because I set everything to Unlisted only when all resolutions work fine. I don't want people watching in low quality like 360p, and since 1440p looks better than that, I need it ready before anyone sees my stuff. That means I haven't had any views on new videos for over twenty-four hours (one even took longer than forty-eight hours but still hasn't worked). I'm watching a video that went up yesterday at one forty sharp; it's now six thirty and still not processing to 1440p, so no new views are coming. Even though my other channel gets processed fast without any views or subscribers, YouTube doesn't care about that. All I really want is if the 1080p videos looked as good as the 1440p ones when using the VP9 codec, but instead they look terrible, especially with fast moving scenes on screen. I'm not impressed by YouTube right now and probably won't be any better either.

That hasn't been true for me, and it is difficult to understand what you actually mean because you say people never finish processing fully but then claim it takes twenty times longer. As far as I can tell, my estimates are about five times slower than you described. It probably depends on how long your videos are, though I uploaded a few fourteen or fifteen minute files yesterday midday, and they were turned into 1440p quality by early this morning. Normally, they finish later today or tonight, but there is no doubt that many people have started uploading recently, especially with the COVID situation and the holiday season making things slower. In my experience, it's not broken like it was a few months ago when I first joined this thread back then; back then videos wouldn't even start processing until three or more days later. To sum up: just be patient and enjoy that everything is working at all, even if the speed is much lower than you imagined. It is tough times for everyone, including big businesses. Just remember, these services are far from essential, so people are lucky they are still running at all.

It did seem a bit confusing, granted... the videos that NEVER finished are the ones that hadn't processed after nearly 2 days and I've just ended up deleting them. The ones that DO finish I've left for nearly 2 days, then eventually they do process to 1440p, as long as I'm patient (which I'm not always). Just kinda frustrating to see "Processing HD version, SD complete" flashing for a solid 24 hours. I understand that with all that is going on, YouTube is being pushed more than usual so I get that things may seem slower than normal for a while, but I have had videos process to 1440p in under a day, and this was just last week. Well, hopefully my current upload will get to 1440p, then I can finally set it to Public. And yes, we are indeed lucky that non-essential service are still up and running to keep us busy and keep our minds occupied.

Well you never said if the total time included upload time, just processing time after it uploaded (especially HD processing time after SD finished), so if it IS total time including upload time your ISP upload speed comes into play. Also the length of the videos you didn't mention. I'm mad at myself right now because I thought I had 3 new videos ready to post but then found out the first of those 3 never got uploaded. DOH! It says about 34 min left to upload right now, which will probably be more like an hour when SD processing is done, and I'll no doubt be lucky if the 1440p processing finishes by tonight. I always wait until 1440p processing is done before I post because I never know if some viewers want to watch them fullscreen or on what size display. They look okay at 1080p on my 32" TV on YT's small viewer, especially as embedded videos here, but pretty blurry fullscreen without 1440p.
