Did you know QuestionNo Network has something to say about cold boot?
My computer won't connect to the internet when I turn it on for the first time or log in. It works if I just restart it instead. This started happening a few days ago after I bought my PC back in early 2020 with the Win10 and Gigabyte Z490 Aorus Master settings.
Try looking at the network settings instead of rebooting. Use IPCONFIG /all or run ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew. If those commands work, it probably means your router has a glitch in its automatic network (DHCP) system. You can fix this by setting a special IP address manually for that port.
It's weird when your port isn't working. Usually, that means something is broken on the hardware side. Try checking your BIOS settings to see if any of those silly green power lights are turned on. Sometimes unplugging it from the wall and plugging it back in with the ethernet cable will fix things.
Yes, I did that too. It said to plug the cable in. So let's look at the BIOS settings again.
Is this an add-in card, a USB connection, or did you plug it into the motherboard? Has Windows updated recently (or were other driver updates applied)? Check NIC power settings in Device Management. Try swapping out the network cable. Does the NIC light stay on even when the computer is completely off? When you cold start the PC, does that NIC light turn on during the boot process or right after windows loads? Try moving the cable to another port on your router.
Run ipconfig /all one more time and show me what it looks like. You should be able to copy and paste the numbers right away without typing them all over again. Do that first, right after you start up when it says no network is connected. Then do it again after your computer comes back online and the network shows up. Compare the two lists of data.
The machine won't connect to a network, which means it shows up with no data. But once I restarted it, everything came back right away.
I checked everything on board—cables, ports, and resets—and decided to reset the drivers just in case. But wait, my switch light was blinking while the computer itself stayed off. This means the problem is with my switch. I'll go back to using the old settings now.
