Could the high-capacity settings on the CPU power area be causing issues? I’m not sure if the CPU itself is malfunctioning—it functioned properly when placed in the socket and has been there ever since.
I own an Optiplex 3020 MT board, though perhaps a third of its connectors are through-hole while the remainder are surface-mount. All the parts flagged here are through-hole, so I’m aiming for a fully through-hole unit to practice. I don’t want to destroy any working boards, so I’ll use the one with burnt VRMs. It’s a bit of a shame modern boards don’t offer this option. It’s comforting when your machine clearly communicates issues instead of just flashing codes or LED warnings. The lack of adjustable volume is frustrating; it’s more direct about the fault. When I removed the CPU and restarted, it sounded like the board was shouting “NO CPU INSTALLED.” You can even leave your own messages—record them if you wish. I’m thinking of replacing them with similar alerts but slightly altered: “No CPU installed: There’s no CPU, stupid. Put one in and try again.” System checks failed in various ways: RAM test reported an error, CPU testing flagged issues, CPU overclocking triggered a joke, VGA didn’t display properly, keyboard detection missed, LGR startup failed, IDE drive wasn’t found, and the fan stopped working. The temperature reading was absurdly high. I’m considering resetting it to lower voltages. After the Power-On Self Test, it failed and booted from OS, showing MS-DOS. I’m uncertain if a dedicated sound card will be available, but I’ll have my own audio setup for clarity. Anyway, it’s time to tidy up for tonight. The case fits surprisingly well—no flexing, just a solid feel. My other cases would have bent under the load.
It appears to be an LGA model. Possible causes include dirty pads, bios problems, faulty capacitors, or a defective CPU. However, five beeps suggest CPU-related issues. This doesn't necessarily indicate hardware failure, but with age, checking for bulges and leaks would be wise.
It's not LGA, the correct connector is socket 478, which uses PGA.
BIOS chip can be taken out easily, and the board supports booting from a floppy drive. If I manage to create a bootable floppy, I’ll attempt that. I’m hoping to try it but don’t have another compatible 478 chip. I own a Core 2 Duo T5600 which works, though it’s not listed as compatible. A Celeron M 370 fits but isn’t available (and is in a laptop). I also have a Pentium 4 HT 3.4 GHz Prescott, which matches what the board has.

I've never shared this board before, but the RAM is functioning—tested it on my iMac G5 and all 2GB was recognized. The manual claims support for 1GB DIMMs, yet I tried 512MB ones just to be safe. No success. I replaced it with a brand-new unit last night. I'm creating a bootable floppy to check if the BIOS is corrupted. It might be possible, but I'm still uncertain.
