Currently, with more powerful PCs and easier access to mods, things have improved a lot. You can now enjoy the Ultima series on your Windows 8 machine without major issues. Back then, getting the 8MB AI patch for Total Annihilation took a long time—half an hour! This meant fewer chances to mess up parts of the game and upload them online. Still, Crysis depended heavily on IPC; you had to overclock to hit better frame rates, needing around 4.4ghz for smooth performance above 50fps.

Yes, CRYSIS remains a solid choice for benchmarking even with a new rig.

It experiences decreasing benefits. At this stage, only IPC plays a key role in boosting performance. From the Sandybridge phase, we've observed improvements of around 20-25%.

EA likely pushed Crysis out quickly, which means it wasn't fully optimized.

Bad CPU usage, Crytek did a much better job in 2 and 3. I actually enjoyed 2 somewhat, 3 was made boring by the bow.
