It's actually permissible, but you need the original version, and if it becomes unusable, you must erase the backup. You're allowed to copy your full game library, but playing them legally means you can't go around the protection systems. Downloading movies is fine, though sharing isn't (people get hurt when they redistribute files via torrents instead of downloading directly).
