Hi everyone! I’m planning to assemble another custom PC for my architectural office. I need a dependable machine that can handle demanding software like Rhinoceros 3D, Affinity, ArchiCad, Twin Motion, etc., and still allow me to enjoy current games with acceptable performance. A quiet build is essential. My budget is around €2,500. I’m not entirely new to this project, but I lost access to my old email address. The last build that could serve as a reference was here: https://forums. And I’m still using it now. I thought it would be useful to share my experience and get feedback from the community. This previous build performed very well for me, though it had some consistent background noise and increased noise during heavy usage. The GPU (RX480) is quite powerful, so this version might feel a bit bulkier but more professional. My current concept looks like this: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/3cxVrM What are your thoughts? Feel free to ask any questions—I’m open to suggestions and looking forward to the discussion! Best regards -m

RAM and another SSD are needed. I use a lot in Rhino and previously had 96GB RAM, but it struggled with some models and 64GB. The second SSD is for working files and cache space.

I think the RAM should be around 64GB DDR5-6000, similar to this model.
However, given the current market, prices could jump by up to 100% tomorrow, so I haven't considered that yet.
I plan to use a second screen just for documents and a 32-inch display for main tasks.
I'll also be collecting my old PC, an additional 1TB drive, and a 500GB SSD for storing data and assets.

For Rhino or any CAD application...64GB minimum required.

After 9 years, fancy meeting you here again.
At current time, RAM prices are out of the world + then some. And since you do CAD work, you'll need lots of RAM, which will cost you a fortune.
Btw, i'm now also rocking modern AM5 builds. Specs/pics in my sig.
As for your build, i refined it;

Few words;
CPU - R7 9800X3D will wipe the floor with R7 7800X3D;
Source:
https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-r...3d/29.html
Also, R7 9800X3D is currently the best gaming CPU, aka king of games. I have the very same CPU in my two builds.
CPU cooler - Ideally, i wanted to put in Thermalright Royal Pretor 130 (aka king of air coolers), since besides stellar reviews, i can personally vouch for it as well (running them in my builds as of now). But sadly, it is not available. So, put in 2nd best air cooler: Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 EVO.
Review:
https://www.techpowerup.com/review/therm...ler/6.html
There is 0 reason for you to pay double the price for Noctua, when Phantom Spirit outperforms Noctua.
MoBo - Same as you picked. It has 14+2+1 VRM conf, rated 80A with SPS.
Ideally, more VRM phases would be better, like my AsRock X870E Nova Wifi, with 20+2+1 VRM conf, rated 110A with SPS. But better MoBo means extra €200, which for you, may not be worth it.
RAM - 2x 32GB Kingston Fury Beast. No RGB eyecandy but will fit just fine under the CPU cooler. Sadly, RAM prices are through the roof as of now. I too have Kingston Fury Beast RAM but mine is RGB one and 2x 16GB set.
SSD - I removed the 2TB 980 Pro PCI-E Gen4 drive and replaced it with 1TB 9100 Pro PCI-E Gen5 drive. Use it as an OS drive (i'm running the same SSD but mine is 2TB in size). And since you'll be bringing other drives from old build, there is no need to buy additional storage as of now.
GPU - Replaced it with RTX 5070. It offers better performance while costing considerably less. Slight downside is the VRAM amount, from 16GB down to 12GB.
PC case - the one you picked.
PSU - Replaced Seasonic unit with Corsair RMx. Seasonic is good, and would be my 1st choice. Sadly, Corsair offers a bit cheaper, but equally good, option. Going with Corsair saves you €30 but offers 100W less capacity. This change was mainly to fit within €2500 budget. But you can switch back to Seasonic unit if you like.

Costdown version of Focus GX. Borderline low quality PSU (Tier B-).
Not sufficient build quality for OPs build (or any build with a dedicated GPU).
PSU tier list: [link]
For OP's build, Tier A is suitable. Just like the Corsair RM550x 2015 I recommended for OP nine years ago. Solid Tier A PSU. OP didn't skimp on the PSU back then, and I don’t see a reason to do so now. Also, I think OP can afford the extra €10 to upgrade to Corsair RM750x 2024 instead of Seasonic Core GX 2024 this time.

Here’s a revised version of your message with the same length and structure:

I found it quite interesting to review everything before replying. Based on your insights, here’s what I’m considering now.
Currently around 1800€ without RAM.
Case:
@Why_Me
I really like the antec Flux SE case. The wood is actually a nice touch and fits perfectly in my office, right?
CPU/MoBo/Cooler
Right now I lean towards AMD, even though it’s a bit more expensive. Maybe I could splurge on the CPU upgrade with the R7 98003d instead of just the case.
Would the Noctua coolers with 120mm still be suitable?
Storage:
I upgraded the .M2 drive to 2TB. I’m quite frustrated about the lack of storage space.
GPU:
Everyone seems okay with a GeForce RTX 5070 variant. Is there anything wrong with what I chose?
https://geizhals.at/sapphire-pure-radeon...40916.html
The 20GB GDDR6 is fine, I don’t mind the color, and the price feels too low. It’s also supposed to be very quiet, which would be nice. Is the GDDR6 enough for the future?
Usually I’m just choosing AMD GPUs out of habit, but that’s optional.
PSU:
Of course saving money is good, but I don’t want to compromise on important parts and risk damaging the system. I’ve used a Corsair RM650x for 9 years without any issues and would be happy to do it again for a bit more.
Time is money:
RAM prices are unlikely to drop soon. Should we have a specific time to buy these items, perhaps wait for the XMas returns and get some budget RAM?
😆
I’m not against used gear if it makes sense. I also have some time left but plan to retire my current PC by late March for safety.
Edit:
If I can save a bit, I’d really appreciate your advice.
P.S.:
@Aeacus
It’s really impressive how quickly you responded so thoroughly and thoughtfully again.
😀
Thanks a lot!
