I'm just starting out with PC upgrades and replacing components. I recently switched from the Ryzen 3600x to the Ryzen 9 5950x. During intense gameplay, temperatures often reach 85-86°C and the system shuts down at 90°C. The new CPU installation worked without issues, but I applied fresh thermal paste and the cooler plate fits well, making good contact. My case is mid-sized and I’m using a MasterLiquid Lite 240 CPU cooler. I wonder if this could be the cause or what cooler would help lower the temps? Any suggestions would be great! Also, my CPU is idling between 40-48°C when idle.

I also suggest reapplying thermal paste to the CPU and spreading it evenly across the entire heatspreader this time (using your finger or a plastic tool). The Ryzen 5000 series features compute and IO dies positioned far apart, which might prevent them from touching the cooler or thermal paste unless properly spread. Undervolting and Eco Mode can also be beneficial.

The image shows a 7950x setup, but the I/O die and CCD placement are aligned. The I/O die produces around 40W, with the two CCDs (or one for certain Ryzen CPUs) handling the rest. Undervolting likely won't help if you're hitting maximum temps—this usually happens with real thermal problems. Things to verify: all connectors, including SATA power from the cooler, are securely attached. Many AIOs need SATA for pumps and fan headers serve just as a safety check. Double-check mounting pressure from the screws, remove any factory protective film from the CPU cold plate, and use sufficient thermal paste—more is often better unless it becomes conductive.

Your cooling isn't performing well enough. Possible issues include poor contact, insufficient pressure, or it might fail altogether. What are your idle temperatures?

Consider grabbing a photo when you have a moment, thanks! After the initial application of the paste, I verified and removed the radiator, which was tough because it stuck tightly to the processor (it wouldn’t pull up easily). The paste covered everything nicely and seemed sufficient. It might have been due to inconsistent clamp pressure—both were secured very firmly. I’m using the Noctua NT-H1 3.5g, Pro-Grade Thermal Compound Paste.

It’s worth mentioning the front section, where the cooling fans are placed—it lacks a grille and sits in a narrow space with a side opening. All the fans are still operating normally.

I'm not certain it's a contact issue, just rechecked and both clamps appear to be firmly in place. Previously the thermal paste was applied on both sides, which seems to cause the fluctuation. Now it's around 45°C even when idling. It's unclear why it nearly shifts by 20 degrees Celsius.

Looks typical, Ryzens heat up quickly on minor jobs since they jump straight to increase your idle temps. If it climbs to 90°C while gaming, the cooler seems too weak.
