CPU performance after adjusting PBO configurations.
I shared some time ago that my CPU (5700X) was getting hot at 80°C during games. Recently I dedicated several hours to improving its performance and here are the outcomes. Ambient: 36°C Stock PBO Auto BF1- 72°C Apex- 75°C CBR23- 74°C (13684/1517) Aida64- 75°C Eco mode + Curve Optimiser BF1- 67°C Apex- 70.4°C CBR23- 62°C (12905/1537) Aida64- 63.5°C Curve Optimiser -17 all cores except core 3&5 which are -9 as they are best cores as per Ryzen Master. So far it's stable. Although the temperatures didn't drop as much as expected, they stayed at or below 70°C. The voltage now only reaches about 1.3V, except for brief spikes where it briefly hits 1.35V. My clocks remain around 3.9Ghz in benchmarks and 4.65Ghz in games; I haven't noticed any clock speed reduction. Also, according to Ryzen Master during stress testing, my TDC is in the red/yellow range. Is this something to worry about?
In eco mode the clock speeds in cinebench have fallen from 4.1-4.2 to 3.8-3.9, with rare spikes up to 4.65 that likely affect multicore performance. While gaming it still reaches 4.6Ghz. I didn't enable any overclocking since I aimed to lower temperatures and achieve better stability, which my earlier offset adjustments and fixed core ratio couldn't provide. Previously, I used -25 All Core without PPT/EDC/TDC settings, but it caused crashes.
This indicates you're close to or hitting the maximum allowed power and voltage settings. PPT refers to a strict power constraint in watts, while TDC is a current restriction in amps. Seeing red or yellow signals the CPU needs more power or higher current, but the system blocks it. In short, your power limits are restricting how much the device can draw.
You're looking for cooler performance during hot months and more consistent operation. It's good to know this setup won't risk damaging the CPU by limiting its speed rather than pushing it beyond safe limits.
Lowering the voltage and cutting power limits can be gentler on the CPU compared to using default settings. If it affects component life, it should only enhance performance. These adjustments won’t damage your hardware, though there’s a small chance of instability if the system crashes during data writing. As long as you conduct proper stability checks, the risk remains minimal.
You should consider additional stability evaluations. Since you've completed P95 and the Occt AVX2 Variable test without issues, focus on longer-duration assessments and environmental stress checks to ensure consistent performance.
