CPU is running yet the screen remains off.
Hello guys, recently my cousins pc didn't give display, nor any power to the usb ports and I don't know what to do anymore, I tried reseating the cpu, repluging all psu cables, testing out the rams, switching the gpu, changing drives, but nothing helps, for some reason the cpu fan is spinning, the gpu is getting hot, but the fans are not spinning, It happened same with the replacement gpu I used, also I tried a different PCI-E slot too. I know that it's not the mobo nor the PSU cus as far as I know with a faulty PSU it wouldn't even boot and same with mobo. Please help me, they can't afford a new pc at the moment, and my cousin really wants to play, also it apparently worked fine b4, he said that he was playing roblox and that his pc randomly lagged and he couldn't do anything, windows key didn't work, just nothing D: So he turned the pc off and turned it on again and after that the problems started Specs: R7 370 4gb GPU Amd fx 6300 CPU Gigabyte ga-970 (something, sadly I can't remember from the top of my head) Motherboard Evolveo fx750W PSU Some random 500gb sata ssd
It might still be the power supply unit. PSUs can fail without completely stopping, which is more frequent than them shutting down entirely. I think the PSU is probably the main culprit. It looks like a generic brand, so swapping it out could help. I’d also consider replacing it with a better option, such as a Corsair CX, to improve reliability if that resolves the problem.
You haven’t mentioned it, but have you attempted to reset the BIOS by taking the battery out for a short time? I’ve used a motherboard that worked that way. It might be a bad PSU after all. The term “evolo” isn’t familiar to me—it seems like an unreliable power supply.
He needed to replace the PSU because it was failing or no longer providing sufficient power.
It seems like a faulty power supply or motherboard might be the issue. Your logic about it being a simple problem isn't correct. There are many potential causes you could face with a motherboard that still lets you boot and receive power. Think about it, you're not missing USB power at all. The only plausible suspects are the PSU, the motherboard itself, the USB ports, or any connecting cables. You don’t need a functioning CPU to access the USB ports directly on the board. We can likely eliminate the USB ports because they wouldn't fail together and wouldn't match other signs of failure. My guess is a defective power supply, though it's not certain. Good luck!
If you have a volt meter, you might want to inspect certain points on the motherboard to confirm they’re getting the correct voltage. This usually needs some advanced electronics knowledge. There’s likely no simple guide that fits your cousin’s specific board. Avoid using the PSU with the volt meter or trying to open it—this can be very risky.
