The AM4 platform doesn't have a single CPU that's universally considered slow or weak—performance depends on the specific model and use case. However, older or lower-end chips like the Intel Core i3-1315 or AMD Ryzen 3 2100 are often criticized for being outdated and underpowered compared to modern gaming needs.

The Ryzen 1200 remains strong for productivity and gaming. The 3000 series offers a solid budget choice. However, the first-gen Ryzen models are becoming outdated.

I wouldn't look further into the past than Zen (Ryzen 2000-series) when I require genuine power.

It really hinges on your specific needs. For a setup focused solely on email processing, an older Core 2 Quad or comparable CPU works well. If you're planning heavy rendering tasks, anything better than a 3600/2700X would be ideal, even then performance is limited by those processors. The situation changes greatly depending on the context, and most AM4 models still have value.

Zen1 (Ryzen first gen) doesn't seem worthwhile. Despite the performance boosts, its RAM problems made it less appealing. Zen+ (2xxx series) marked a step forward with better comparability, though gains were modest. I wouldn't suggest it for new builds. Zen2 (3xxx series) is the best choice right now—some solid improvements and most issues resolved. It's approaching Intel standards. Zen3 (5xxx series) remains outstanding. Zen4 (7xxx series) is where we stand, so fully recommended.

Currently, the least powerful Zen 4 CPU I’d consider purchasing is likely the R5 5500, priced around 99 USD on Amazon.

It depends on the price you can afford; if you already own it, just use it.

Yes, nothing below Zen+ is better. It's encouraging that efforts are being made to preserve the Am4 platform using the latest CPU.

Look for options under 3000, but aim for higher resolutions like 3600, 3600x, or 3700 instead of versions with built-in graphics. The 5000-series remains solid, and 5800X3D can outperform 7700X in certain games.
