W7 works well for short periods but needs to be used soon as supplies last. You can try increasing its limit for about 120 days if needed.
I have multiple Dreamspark accounts and retain my .edu email from college. I’m certain what you mentioned is wrong. Dreamspark does not provide free Windows or Office copies to regular students. You can access many free tools such as Visual Studio and various coding resources, often older versions of Windows Server, Microsoft SQL, and other similar software. However, Windows and Office are excluded from this offering. As a student, you may receive significant discounts—often Office Pro drops to around $100, while Windows deals change with the seasons. If you’re studying computer science, like I did, you usually get more advanced resources. With these privileges, you can install Windows 7/8/8.1 at no cost and also use newer, high-end server operating systems such as Server 2012 R2 Datacenter. Still, Office remains unavailable for free.
Gather your preferred Linux distribution until version 10 arrives, or simply transfer your previous Windows setup to the new machine.
Interesting... I received Office and Windows for free through DreamSpark, possibly because of the agreement my university has with M$
