This might happen due to lag spikes in chrome or similar software. It usually freezes for a brief moment before resuming.

I run Linux Mint 17.2 called Rafaela, which is entirely free and looks more like a typical desktop than Ubuntu despite their similarities. You can locate the download by searching for "linuxmint 17.2" online—just need to either burn the ISO onto a disc or attach it to a flash drive using a pendrive, which is very straightforward and convenient.
