Consider upgrading to the second generation Threadripper for better performance and features.
Hey everyone, I have a Ryzen Threadripper 1900X with 8 cores on my PC, and I'm using an Aorus Gaming 7 with F10 BIOS. Both are on the same platform, so I was thinking about upgrading to a Ryzen 2950X. My main worries are reinstalling everything and getting a new Windows license, plus reinstalling all the software I use. I’m a developer and play some light games like Total War: Warhammer 2 when I have time. What do you think?
I’d choose it myself. It’s cost-effective and superior—why not?
I work on tasks that could gain from more processing units. Software development might need improved single-threaded speed, though I’m unsure about the specific compilation process. It’s possible the 2920X would be a better choice. No worries—drivers and the motherboard are the main bottlenecks, not the CPU.
Budget... by the time I assembled CPU, motherboard, 32 GB RAM, and a 2x NVMe SSD, plus the cooler, it was still pretty tight. I first considered a Ryzen 7 but ended up choosing a Threadripper because of the extra PCIe lanes. All in all, it was mostly a tight situation.
I used those additional PCIe lanes to enhance performance and support more demanding tasks.
Upgrading your CPU shouldn't involve any adjustments in Windows. I'm unsure about any software with per-core licensing, but the rest should work fine. Just update the BIOS and drivers.
