Another update for the 5800X3D. It’s worth considering if you really need PCIe 4.0. If you’re okay with it, going to a B550 might be smart, though your motherboard works well with the 5800X3D. PCIe 4.0 isn’t currently beneficial, but it could matter later with direct storage support. I suggest upgrading your CPU to the 5800X3D now and planning a switch to a B550 or X570 in a few years for future compatibility.

This affects the decision. I’d upgrade to a 5950x since programming needs more cores plus more cache. For combining programming with gaming, I’d go with the 5800x3D, but if I add the 5950x it would be better to stick with the 5800x3D.

It needs a solid amount of RAM first, followed by a CPU with multiple cores second. A 5900x or even a 5950x would be a solid upgrade. My setup has a 5900x with 32 GB RAM and it really helps when building big Java projects, running Docker containers, and occasionally using VMs all at once. The B550 chipset might be worth considering if storage is a limiting factor, allowing you to use a PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive. However, in most situations the performance gap isn't obvious beyond benchmark tests.
