You can play Star Citizen using just a keyboard and mouse. Joysticks and a throttle are optional accessories, but they’re not required to start.

You can use only a keyboard and mouse, which seems simpler for a joystick and throttle, similar to how a racing sim feels with wheels and pedals—though it's not required.

If you enjoy the game, I’d suggest getting a joystick and throttle controller. Any specific recommendations?

It would be simpler to rely on a controller instead of managing everything manually.

Mouse and keyboard are outperforming some joystick users, yet they offer deeper engagement. Options include joystick, mouse, keyboard, or controller—my choice leans toward the controller.

I favor using a mouse and keyboard. This provides me with precise control, which I find very useful.

remember, I’m not sure if your friend shared this, but the game is still in pre-alpha and far from finished. We only have a PvP mode, plus a wave fighter, racing, and FPS features on the horizon. It’s not fully polished yet, so if you don’t want to play through all the bugs, wait until it’s released.

I prefer k/m since it's what I rely on daily. It's ideal for my aggressive sniper play in FPS, giving me solid accuracy and saving costs compared to premium high-end options (unless you're after something extreme).
