The DSL connection has been unreliable for a while now. Right now, there are no other alternatives available, so we’re dealing with what we have. I checked the "network interface device" outside our home and saw that some of the phone line cables aren’t properly connected. Can I just plug in the missing wires, or would that make no difference?

Usually DSL connects via a phone line or two wires. Many cables such as cat5/5e/6 contain four pairs, meaning three pairs aren’t being used right now. That’s the normal setup, and these wires can’t be connected to anything if you tried.

DSL needs just one pair of wires. Extra ones don’t help much. I’m puzzled about how this box was set up—looks really messed up. Why white and brown for ground? That doesn’t make sense. And what’s with the orange pair? What’s its purpose?

Thanks for the feedback. It seems like the main concern is that they’re the only option locally, so people might assume it’s fine regardless of quality. There’s also a suspicion they could have intentionally done poorly just for the sake of it.

We intend to secure fiber in the future, but I’m certain I’m still taking full advantage of what DSL offers now.

For telephony services, a bypass filter is typically employed for both phone and DSL on the same connection, though some setups also utilize distinct conductor pairs.

The UK continues to rely on traditional PSTN (analogue) systems until around 2025.

Analogue and ISDN have disappeared from Germany entirely. Even for those needing analog, it’s being mimicked by the ISP. It’s surprising to see western nations with such poor options compared to Germany.

I’m considering Docsis 3.0 without fiber or a very outdated copper line that only manages double-digit download speeds. I also live near two towns.
