I'm wondering if she might have unintentionally activated airplane mode or something similar. Macs do have diagnostic tools during startup to verify hardware functionality.
If it isn’t covered by the warranty, it might not be worth fixing. The 2013 Wi-Fi wasn’t very good either.
It looks like a 2015 model, a certified local apple repair shop and my second preferred place will handle it in two days for under $100. She probably won’t wait that long, so I booked a service at an official apple shop to get a quote. If they can’t give a realistic price, I’ll let them know it’s not worth it, and they’ll likely just use the adapter.
