I’m familiar with the distinctions for gaming CPUs. What makes me want one is that I already own a 3060 Ti. Yet I don’t feel the need right now since most of my gaming requirements are covered. Even though I’m facing some limitations, I still manage to maintain around 60 FPS in my games. My monitor only supports 60 Hz, and my beat saber performs well. However, my PC is shared with my girlfriend, who also spends a lot on web browsing, opening many Google Sheets and tabs. We’re not having major issues, but it’s slow. For instance, a bookmark folder on my Chrome would open multiple tabs at once, which takes time. Would upgrading to a newer CPU with M.2 slots really boost our PC speed? The upgrade is intended for Windows 11, as security updates for Windows 10 won’t be supported in 2025. I haven’t upgraded before; I’ve only used a Dell Latitude with an 8th gen i5, which is a laptop CPU. It does certain tasks faster, but overall it feels similar to my desktop. Or maybe I should wait. Right now, I’m taking advantage of many discounts. Plus, the benefit of upgrading would be better performance in Warzone 2, though it’s not my primary game. Still, I’m seeing some great deals these days.
For handling many Chrome tabs you require ample RAM (16GB or more). An A Mali chip can speed things up considerably, far outpacing a traditional HDD but not as quick as a solid-state drive. A 6C/12T 5600X offers a noticeable boost over an older 4C/4T 4690K, especially since the latter lacks hyperthreading—so you can pack in relatively little work without overwhelming the processor.
The 5600x will significantly boost productivity with multiple tabs active.
You'll need to create an entirely new setup since the 4690k and Ryzen have different CPU slots. If you don't want a full PC rebuild, consider switching to a different Intel CPU. Also, @PDifolco is right—slowdowns with Chrome tabs usually point to RAM rather than the CPU, so upgrading there won't help much.
Do you have a video available? I’m curious to see the performance improvements directly. Right now, I only see benchmark results and FPS comparisons.
I’ve got plenty of memory, a solid SSD with 250GB, and a gaming drive that’s 1TB. Google Sheets tends to lag, probably due to the volume of data we manage. And wow, I used to think I had Hyperthreading—haha... ops.
m.2 with a small cache performs significantly better than even a standard SATA SSD. Many users overlook the advantage because it's quite minor, though it adds value. Other improvements like faster RAM and additional cache also help slightly with everyday use. Still, the distinctions are subtle and may not justify the cost right now. The 4690K offers more CPU power than you really need for browsing the web. It would be better to wait until you need something more powerful, such as a Ryzen 7000 series or later.
I noticed that M.2 drives are significantly quicker. On a MacBook, the difference is noticeable right away. What bothers me now is finding local shops with functional Windows PCs and strong internet connections. Apple stores seem to offer better devices in working condition, letting you test apps directly. Windows machines feel lacking, which is frustrating. I think this is why I enjoy Apple stores—you can actually use their devices before buying them. There are many advantages of a new CPU, but without a clear comparison it's tough to judge. The Gamer Nexus video helped, but it’s hard to see the difference clearly. Unlike side-by-side iPhone vs Samsung speed tests, you can visually confirm they’re almost the same. I’d like to see how a 5600X or newer CPU performs in everyday tasks.
you cant show a clear comparison because there is no difference. It is something you can maybe feel a slight difference if you're the one there using it, but otherwise it's whatever. Maybe there would be a slight difference in some sites if you have a 10gb/s connection to the internet but otherwise eh. I end up using a large spread of computers at my work every day with massively varying performance and past the point of like kaby lake laptops there's just no difference at all for stuff like office online, sharepoint, outlook, random websites, installing programs, general office use. No one is going to talk about it because you cant sell people on new hardware that does nothing for them.
