Hello. I'm considering switching from Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 8.1 on x64. Both versions are available, but I want to know which one suits my needs better. I run games like CS:GO and LoL, as well as programming tools such as Visual Studio and NetBeans. What would you recommend—stay with Windows 7 or upgrade to Windows 8.1? My PC specs include a Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H motherboard, AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Sapphire HD 7850, dual SSDs (2x2TB WD Caviar), and an SSD disk. Thanks!

For your needs and if you're comfortable with seven, I’d keep it at seven but that’s just my opinion. Since you have eight point one available, you could install it on an extra drive and test it out before making the switch completely.

8.1 operates significantly quicker, and using the Start Menu in Windows 8 functions exactly as version 7.

From my perspective, the 8.1 version feels slow and difficult to use for completing tasks, making me prefer the 7 instead. That said, 8.1 offers some speed improvements, though it's all about what works best for you.

Thank you for your input. I’m not interested in metro or Windows 8.1 features. I reached out because I encountered errors during early testing and experienced shutdowns. From that point, has Windows 8.1 been improved? What about the driver updates?

Verify the Visual Studio version to see if it supports Windows 8. The rest depends on your preference—some prefer it, others don’t. I personally haven’t recommended Windows 8 yet, even though I like it. Drivers work well for me, but I experienced errors and shutdowns during the customer preview phase. Once it was officially released, everything became smooth.

It varies based on your needs—decide if you want to reset everything. Test it with a tool that mimics the Windows 7 start menu like Start8.

There are lingering problems with some older boards due to missing drivers for 8.1. Essentially, the issue remains unresolved until a patch is applied. It seems developers are still working on fixes, but updates like moving the start menu aren't helping everyone.

I have installed the SSD drive and prefer working solely with it. I want to avoid delays from swapping back to Windows 7. I looked into driver compatibility for my motherboard and noticed that the OS option in the drivers section is limited to Windows 8. It’s unclear if using Windows 8.1 would work without issues.
